The first time we ever visited Rome, we were on our very first trip abroad on a cruise and our kids were only five and one. Since we only had one day, we were determined to see as much as we could, kids and all. We accomplished a lot in our one day, and knew we would be back. And we have been back many, many times and still look forward to visiting as often as we can. But if you have only one day to spend in the Eternal City, here is a sample itinerary to see as much as you can.
Start at Piazza del Popolo. This is the gateway to Rome. Check out the obelisk, cathedrals, and huge square.
Next, make your way on foot to the Borghese Gardens for a quick stroll.
Then, head to the Spanish Steps. Walk to the top for a great view, or linger a while, just don’t sit down!
Trevi Fountain is next. Throw a coin backwards over your shoulder and wish to come back to Rome.
Lunch – we recommend you try Cacio e Pepe, a Roman specialty.
On to the Pantheon! Go inside and see the famous dome and oculus.
Behold the Monument to the Unknown Soldier
Next, Head to the Roman Forum and Colosseum. You will need timed tickets purchased in advance to go inside.
Finally, make your way to St. Peter’s Square.
Unfortunately, one day is not enough time to get the most out of the Vatican Museum or Sistine Chapel, so save these for your return trip. Grab some dinner and gelato and call it a day!
